Today is the day of St. Matthias. The scriptures don't give us many details about St. Matthias. What we do know is that in Acts 1, he was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot as the 12th apostle.
Due to a lack of other information on Matthias in the scriptures, some have supposed that his being chosen was a mistake on the part of the other eleven and that the spot was really reserved for Paul. However, I think that this overlooks the fact that Matthias fulfilled the qualifications: he had seen the risen Christ, been a disciple, and could testify to miracles. The fact of the matter is, that we don't have much more information.
However, I think that we should use this time to ponder the nature of the apostleship as a unique institution of the Church that serves as a foundation for our faith.
